Johana Perez of Goleta is the Devereux California recipient of the 2022 Thomas Donovan Culture of Caring Award, presented by Devereux Advanced Behavioral Health. The award is presented annually to a staff member at each of Devereux’s centers who goes above and beyond on a daily basis to help the individuals Devereux serves to achieve their full and unique potential.

Perez, a direct support professional, joined the Devereux California team in early 2021, and has proven to be an integral part of its programs. She always maintains a “can-do” attitude, and is willing to help out in any program where staffing is needed, Devereux California said.

"Perez often works additional shifts to support the program, the individuals she serves and her colleagues," Devereux said. "No matter the situation, Johana always brings her 'A' game. She maintains a collaborative, relaxed and supportive demeanor.

"She brings her smile and positive attitude to every shift, putting the needs of our individuals first, while keeping them engaged and involved in community outings."

Thomas Donovan served Devereux Advanced Behavioral Health as a trustee, friend and benefactor, for more than two decades. He served on the Devereux Board of Trustees from 1989 to 2010. During his tenure as chairman, 1997-2002, he expressed his feelings about the qualities that differentiate Devereux from other behavior healthcare providers:

“Devereux has many wonderful attributes that contribute to success. However, let us never forget that it is our Devereux culture of caring that makes everything we do effective and successful. A caring culture, coupled with outstanding treatment, makes Devereux the unique and successful organization it is today.”   In 2002, the Board of Trustees established the Thomas Donovan Culture of Caring Award to pay tribute to Donovan and his selfless service to the organization.

Welcome to Noozhawk Asks, a new feature in which you ask the questions, you help decide what Noozhawk investigates, and you work with us to find the answers.

Here’s how it works: You share your questions with us in the nearby box. In some cases, we may work with you to find the answers. In others, we may ask you to vote on your top choices to help us narrow the scope. And we’ll be regularly asking you for your feedback on a specific issue or topic.

We also expect to work together with the reader who asked the winning questions to find the answer together. Noozhawk’s objective is to come at questions from a place of curiosity and openness, and we believe a transparent collaboration is the key to achieve it.

The results of our investigation will be published here in this Noozhawk Asks section. Once or twice a month, we plan to do a review of what was asked and answered.
