Things got weird in the Mets’ broadcast booth on Monday night during the team’s 11-5 win over the Padres in San Diego.

With the Mets holding a 5-1 lead, second baseman Jeff McNeil led off the sixth inning with a single off pitcher Steven Wilson. Perhaps feeling the effects from the late start on the West Coast, announcers Gary Cohen and Keith Hernandez descended into hilarity, or perhaps delirium, when discussing the hit.

“So here we are again, the Mets stroking out eight hits…” Hernandez began to say before Cohen interrupted him with laughter.

“Did you say stroking out?” Cohen asked in disbelief.

“Yes. It’s a baseball stroke!” Hernandez responded.

“I think you need to watch your language there,” Cohen replied. “Because, you know, we’re getting older. And stroking out is something we don’t want to be doing.”

Hernandez, his mind clearly deep in the gutter, didn’t seem to quite be picking up what Cohen was putting down.

“What are you saying, I’m a creepy old man?” Hernandez asked, to more laughter from Cohen.

“No, no, no. I think you’re missing the point here. From a medical standpoint, do you know what stroking out means? You don’t want to say bleeding out, and you don’t want to say stroking out.”

Hernandez then lost all ability to keep it together, descending into hysterical laughter as Tomas Nido walked up to the plate.

The Mets managed to “stroke out” eight more hits – and five more runs – as their record improved to 38-19, good for a nine-game lead over the Braves in the NL East.

Let’s hope the broadcast team can keep it together for another late start Tuesday night.
