Beautiful Batik The Indonesian art of batik—using wax and dyes to create vibrant designs on fabric—is an ancient one, and now you can try your hand at it. Register anytime, and then pick up your take-and-make bag starting July 21. And instructional video will help you along . . . you’ll just have to supply a few tools and your creativity! Ages 16 and up, registration is limited to 15.

Virtual STEM Club Littles Edition: Boat Float: Virtual STEM Club Littles Edition: Boat Float is washing up on the shores of the Portland District Library on Wednesday, July 27. Scientists, ages 5 & under, will be tasked with the challenge of building a boat using the materials in their Take-and-Make bag THEN testing their boat in water to see if it floats! Add small objects from around the house to see how long before the boat starts sinking! Follow along with library staff on YouTube as we guide you and your little one through the project setup and testing phase! Program does require registration, parental supervision, and is limited to 25 patrons.

LEGO Challenge: Shipwrecked: Are you a LEGO fanatic? Do you want to be an engineer when you grow up? Portland District Library’s LEGO Challenge is back again this summer. This program will be IN-PERSON at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 22, for ages 6-9 and 10:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 5, for ages 10-12. Complete building challenges—on the Oceans of Possibilities theme—that will make you think outside of the box! Masks are required, space is limited to 6 patrons, and registration is required.

Teen Art Hour Sealife Suncatchers: Add a splash of color to your bedroom window with Sealife Suncatchers, Teen Art Hour's July craft! Included in July's Take-And-Make bag are a colorful variety of pony beads and a metal cookie cutter of a sea creature. You can choose from a shark, sea turtle, dolphin, stingray, starfish, octopus, seahorse, whale, seashell, octopus, a mermaid's tail, or shark fin! Register at the Youth Desk beginning Friday, July 1. Space is limited to 15 teens, ages 13-18.

The Fresh Food Bonanza: Welcome to The Fresh Food Bonanza! Starting Monday, July 18, we are inviting patrons to pick from the many fresh herbs and veggies in our garden, take the pickings home, and create some edible magic in the kitchen! Patrons can submit photo entries of their delicious creations via email to epock@portlandmilibrary.com for a chance to win a prize. Each week, patrons can submit as many photos as they’d like and a winner will be drawn every Friday until Aug. 26. We can’t wait to see what kinds of tasty plates our patrons will create!
